CAMRY HARRIS

FINDING INSPIRATION IN EVERY TURN

 MY STORY

resizedENHANCED.jpg

Born in Roanoke, Virginia on May 10, 1995,

Camry Harris grew up facing the hardships of life

by finding inspiration at every turn

Camry’s mom  Trina says that Camry started playing drums when he was 3 years old.  By the time he was 8 years old, he was playing drums every Sunday for Mount Bethel Holiness Church.  Life wasn’t easy for Camry and his mom.  Camry lost his father in a car accident when he was 5 years old. Growing up without a father or grandparents, Camry's mother was his lifeline.

As a single mom, raising a star child wasn’t easy.  One afternoon when Camry was 10 years old and home alone on a hot summer’s day, he raised the windows while drumming and had the whole neighborhood dancing in the streets to his sounds.  When his mom got back to the block and saw what was happening, Camry says she was mad but she was glad.

Finding inspiration at every turn for Camry meant playing drums for 2 years with Magna Vista High school, 2 years with Martinsville High School Band, and 4 years on Xylophone, Crash Symbols, Bass Drum, and Snare Drum for the Martinsville Marching Concert Band.  After graduating from high school,  Camry enrolled in the Patrick Henry Community College where he studied Culinary Arts and teamed up with his lifelong kindergarten friend, Griffin Haley.

In November of 2013, Camry, Griffin, and two other students attending Patrick Community College, Riggs Roberson and Austin Janey, along with bass player Wenn Harold formed, 'Left Hip Pocket’. Together they played blues, rock, and a little jazz.  When Camry’s mother Trina died unexpectedly just eight months later,  the band which had become family staged a benefit concert to help Camry raise the money he needed to cover his mother's funeral expenses and medical bills.

Having lost his lifeline, Camry used his drumming talent, his charming personality, and his mom's religious teachings to take to the road.  He has toured for the last 7 years playing R&B, Blues, Rock, Country, Gospel, Funk, Blues, Southern Rock, and Pop with over 50 different bands.   Camry, now known as CAMRYHD still plays drums every Sunday at Agape Bible Christian Fellowship Church in  Martinsville, Virginia.

His latest project includes forming a new band, visiting local schools where he conducts workshops on drumming for kindergarteners, partnering with People 4 People Productions to raise awareness about the need for Film Media Literacy Education for youth, and working alongside his family to honor and bring justice for victims of 'The Martinsville 7' and the legacy of his great grandfather

John Clayborn Taylor.
